Excess Supply in the Spot Market for Labor

چکیده

A distinguishing feature of labor services is that they are immediately perishable. This paper explores the implications of immediate perishability for the market for homogenous labor services that are sold in a centralized exchange. The analysis sheds light on the nature of unemployment. The paper also explores implications for the role of labor cartels and firms in providing workers an alternative to selling their labor services on the spot market. Cartels can be Pareto superior to competition in the spot market because they organize labor to reduce excess supply.

How good are supply function equilibrium models: an empirical analysis of the ERCOT balancing market

We present an empirical analysis of a supply function equilibrium model in the Texas spot electricity market. We derive conditions for optimal bidding behavior in a spot market with ex ante bilaterally contracted sales. By estimating costs, we are able to derive a set of ex post-and ex ante-optimal supply functions and use a non-parametric behavioral model to compare our theoretically optimal s...

Do Labour Market Conditions Affect Gift Exchange? Some Experimental Evidence*

We study how two dimensions of market conditions affect behaviour in experimental giftexchange markets with repeated interaction. Second, we impose a minimum wage in the market with an excess supply of workers, and study the overall effect o...

Do Market Conditions Affect Gift Exchange? Evidence from Experimental Markets with Excess Supply and Excess Demand

We study whether people’s behavior in unbalanced gift exchange markets with repeated interaction are affected by whether they are on the excess supply side or the excess demand side of the market. Our analysis is based on the comparison of behavior between two types of experimental gift exchange markets, which vary only with respect to whether first or second movers are on the long side of the ...
